A Finished Work
When Jesus said, “it is finished” He meant it. It is finished.
What’s finished? The work Christ was to do on earth to save us.
There is nothing you or anyone can do to add to the finished work of Jesus Christ. He lived a sinless life and was the sacrificial Lamb without blemish, sacrificed for your sins.
John 19:30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
By way of the cross,
Jesus defeated sin: He lived a sinless life, so sins chains are loosed from those in Christ. We are no longer slaves to sin.
Romans 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness (King James)
1 Corinthians 7:23 Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men (this means, do not be yoked to the ways of unbelievers. Be in the world but not of it).
Jesus defeated death: Sin is what causes spiritual death and Christ lived a sinless life. 1 Corinthians 15:55" O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?" Even though Jesus had not resurrected yet, His work was finished and so was death. He defeated death at the time of His physical death on the cross by living a sinless life to the time of His death and He bore your sins so you would not have a spiritual death. God the Father was to raise Jesus (a bodily resurrection) as Jesus said, on the third day, as certain as God will raise those in Christ.
Acts 2:24 "But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.
If Jesus would not have been raised then death would not have been defeated. But as this verse says, that was impossible. It is a correct statement that Christ rose from the dead and defeated death. It would be even more telling to say, Christ rose from the dead after He defeated death. It was impossible for death to hold Him. His resurrection was a foregone conclusion.
The sting of death is the second death, for unbelievers, because of sin.
Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."
Matthew 25:46 "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
Those in Christ pass from life to life because Christ bore our sins. If you are in Christ, your physical body will die but your spirit will dwell with God in heaven, having been made alive when you were born again by accepting Christ as Lord.
Jesus defeated Satan from the cross and rendered him powerless: Hebrews 2:14 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,

Romans 8:38-39 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
